          What is it?

          SmallTweak is a small program for Handheld PC to configure device settings without using any registry editors.

            The following settings can be configured with the current version of SmallTweak:

            • Items to be displayed at Desktop or Top folder. My H/PC, Recycle Bin, etc can be configured including their icons and names.
            • To associate Extensions with Applications.
            • Device power off time.
            • Window animation.
            • System fonts.
            • Font cache size.
            • Scrollbar settings.
            • Software Input Panel settings. (CE 2.11 and higher)
            • PocketIE to display 65,536 colors. (CE 2.11)
            • Card battery warning.
            • Clear history for 'Run' from the Start Menu.
            • Clear history for 'Documents' from the Start Menu.
            • Clear history for 'Address' of Explorer.

            SmallTweak has the following advantages over modifying the registry directly:

            1. Safe

              Modifying the registry incorrectly may cause the entire system to fail or crash, specially for inexperienced users. While SmallTweak does not have such risk.

            2. Easy

              When using a registry editor, you must know in advance exactly how and where to make the changes. While SmallTweak uses an easy GUI, you do not have to know anything about the registry to tweak your device.

            3. Convenient

              When tweaking under "Action" tab, all previous settings remain in the drop down list. Thus, you can easily go back to any former settings.


            How to execute

            You can execute it by tapping SmallTweak applet in control panel.


            How to exit

            You can quit by pressing OK or exit button on the upper right corner of the SmallTweak window. Press OK button to apply the changes, press exit button to abandon any changes.


            How to uninstall

            Please be aware that all settings remain as it is after uninstallation. Please confirm all settings according to your preference, prior to uninstallation.

              Then, push the 'Clear' button in the 'About' page of the SmallTweak. This causes all information SmallTweak stored in the registry for itself to be removed.

                Finally, you can uninstall SmallTweak via 'Remove Programs' applet in control panel. There is an entry named 'Tillanosoft SmallTweak'. Select the entry and press 'Remove'


                Height of font

                Both positive and negative value can be assigned to the height of system font in Font page. The value will be interpreted in the following manner:

                Positive value: The value will be treated as the cell height of the available font. The cell is the region which the font occupies.
                0: The value will be treated as a default height of the available font.
                Negative value: Its absolute value will be treated as the character height of the available font. The character height means the height that the font is drawn.


                Default SIP

                Please note that changing the Default Input Panel may render the device non-functional, without a complete restore from PC. It is highly recommended that you perform a Full Backup to your desktop PC prior to changing the Default Input Panel. The author is not responsible for any potential problem whatsoever.


                Font Cache

                You can see the Microsoft tips for Font Cache at the following URL in Japanese.

                    But this is just written for PsPCs, and it is not clearly stated that the tips works also for H/PC. On the other hand, there are some devices factory configured as tips says. Thus Tillanosoft conjecture that the tips also works for H/PC.

                      Changing the size has more significant influence if you are using multi-byte characters such as Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

                        Anyway, the author is not responsible for any potential problem whatsoever.


                        Changing items to be displayed at Desktop or Explorer

                        In order to reflect the change, do "Refresh" on the Desktop or Explorer. For Desktop, press Alt to tap will show a menu which includes the "Refresh" item. For Explorer, choose "Refresh" from "View" on the main menu.


                        Removing items from Desktop and Explorer

                        In the case any of the following items were not displayed either on the Desktop or on the Explorer, going forward or backward to the specific location by Explorer may cause an error, for example, with the following message:

                        Items:

                        1. My Handheld PC
                        2. Control Panel
                        3. Recycle Bin

                        Error Message:

                          The internet site 'My Handheld PC' could not be found.

                        In addition, in the case you configured your device to automatically dial up on your Internet Explorer, your device will attempt to dial up on the above case.

                          It is recommended that you would leave the items either on the Desktop or on the Explorer.


                          Adding items to Desktop and Explorer by former versions

                          SmallTweak version 3.4 and former had a minor problem around adding items to Desktop and Explorer. When it added items, it registered binary string into your registry. It was fairly benign and was not harmful. Since it is weird, you may want to remedy it. Of course, you can do it, by the following operation.

                          1. Remove all Desktop items and Explorer items by SmallTweak in any version including ver 3.4 and 3.5.
                          2. Add items according to your preference by SmallTweak 3.5 or higher.


                          Note for Input Panel page and PocketIE page

                          "Input Panel" page appears only if SmallTweak is executed on Windows CE 2.11 or higher.

                            Check box for the "Display 65,536 colors" on "PocketIE" page is enabled only if SmallTweak is executed on Windows CE 2.11 and your device supports 65,536 colors or more.

                              "PocketIE" page will not be shown on Windows CE 3.0 (HPC 2000)

                                • The Action page has renamed to File Type page and the GUI of the page has changed. The new GUI is much like the File Type page of Windows 2000 Explorer option.
                                • Although only the surface level of settings in the Action page was applicable previously, whole changes in the File Type page are now applied when OK button was pressed.
                                • Desktop page has consolidated Explorer page, and the GUI has changed.
                                • Desktop page added new function to change the icon and its name of special icons on the Desktop or Top Folder.
                                • Font page added new function to change system fonts.
                                • Font cache size hold the value even if it was once disabled then enabled.
                                • Animation page has removed, instead General page has added. Window animation setting has moved to General page.
                                • Pocket IE page has removed for HPC 2000 because it did not work on HPC 2000. (HPC 2000 only)
                                • General page has added Card battery warning setting. (HPC 2000 only)
                                • Paranoia page has been added. The page provides history removals.
                                • Paranoia page added new function to remove Documents history.
                                • Down arrow key became to open drop down list with all combo boxes.
