Troubleshooting

  • If you are having trouble connecting to your Internet service provider, see Remote Networking and Terminal Help.
  • If you are having trouble connecting to a particular server, check the Server Profile information to make sure the Host Name, User ID and Password are valid. Check the FTP log to get a clue of what might be wrong. The server may have too many users logged in and you may have to try again after a while.
  • If the files are corrupt after downloading, check the Transfer Mode. It is recommended that you always use the Binary Mode.
  • You cannot transfer files while Scotty FTP is busy listing or transfering files. The status bar will display Ready to indicate that Scotty FTP is not busy with any operation.
  • If you are behind a Firewall host, you may not be able to connect to FTP servers on the other side of the firewall. Scotty FTP does not currently support firewalls, but this feature will be added in a future release.
  • Most file transfer problems can be identified and resolved by looking at the FTP log.
  • If the directory listing seems incomplete, tap the Refresh button to refresh the file list.

Transfering files

After connecting to an FTP server, you can transfer files between your handheld PC and the server. The status bar will display Ready to indicate that Scotty FTP is not busy with any operation.

Uploading files from your Handheld PC to the FTP server:
  1. Activate the Local tab by tapping on it.
  2. Select the files you want to upload. You can select multiple files by holding down the shift button while tapping on the file name.
  3. Tap the Upload button.

Downloading files from the FTP server to your Handheld PC:
  1. Activate the Remote tab by tapping on it.
  2. Select the files you want to upload. You can select multiple files by holding down the shift button while tapping on the file name.
  3. Tap the Download button.

Tip:
  • To upload or download a single file, you can also double-tap on the file name.

Tips for using Scotty FTP

  • Creating a new server profile
To create a new server profile, tap on the Connect toolbar button to display the Server Profiles dialog box and then tap on the Add button. Enter the server information in the Server Properties dialog box and tap OK to save the settings.
  • Connecting to a server
To connect to an FTP server, tap on the Connect toolbar button to display the Server Profiles dialog box, select a server profile and tap Connect.
  • Using Quick Connect
To connect to a server not listed in the Server Profiles dialog box, tap the Quick Connect toolbar button, enter the server information and tap OK.

The Log tab displays the FTP commands and the server responses. The status bar displays the current activity and the name of the server you are connected to.
  • ToolTips
To see ToolTips, press and hold down the stylus on a toolbar button. To avoid activating the button, drag the stylus off the button before lifting it.

Setting transfer options

File transfer operations can be configured using the "Options" dialog box, which can be displayed by selecting Options from the Transfer menu.

Options Dialog

  • Auto Dial: Scotty FTP can automatically dial out using the selected Dial-Up Networking component when an active Internet connection is not detected. Check the Use Auto-Dial option to enable this feature.
  • Firewall: To enable Passive mode file transfers, select the Passive Transfers option. Scotty FTP can also be configured to transfer files through a firewall. To enable this, select the Use Firewall option and specify the proxy Host Name in either the fully qualified Internet host name (proxy.myISP.net) or using the IP address of the host in the dotted-decimal form (199.26.178.13).
NOTE: Scotty FTP uses the USER user@site method for connecting through the firewall.
  • Advanced: Scotty FTP can be configured to connect to any port on an FTP server. The default FTP port number is 21. When connecting through a firewall using a proxy, this number refers to a port on the proxy server.

Setting server options

Scotty FTP lets Server Profiles be maintained for frequently visited FTP servers. Server profiles are managed using the Server Profiles dialog box, which can be displayed by tapping the Connect toolbar button or selecting Connect from the Server menu. To add a new Server Profile, tap the Add button. To configure an existing Server Profile, select the profile from the list and tap the Properties button.

Server Properties Dialog

  • Profile Name: Enter a descriptive name for the Server Profile here. This name is displayed in the Server Profiles list.
  • Host: Enter the name of the FTP server here. This could be a fully qualified Internet host name (ftp.winsite.com) or an IP address in the "dotted-decimal" form (199.26.178.13).
  • User ID: Enter the User ID for this profile. In most cases anonymous can be used as the User ID.
  • Password: Enter the password for the User ID. For anonymous logins, email address or guest can be used as the password.
  • Initial Directory: Enter the directory on the server to which Scotty FTP should change to after logging in. It is recommended that you leave this field blank.
  • Anonymous Login: Check this option to login anonymously. Most public FTP servers allow anonymous logins and it is recommended that this button be checked.
